On the Law of God in Devotion
On the Law of God in Devotion
Psalm 119
97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
98 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,
for they are ever with me.”
David cried out to his God, the saviour of his soul. He prayed soulfully. Fervently. Giving glory to God for filling him with the light of life in the knowledge of Him. A knowledge of God’s law is a knowledge of God, because God is His law. It could never be some external standard that God looks to in order to find a righteousness outside Himself. God’s law is the expression of His own personal, eternal moral nature. In giving us a law, God gives of Himself, and in by grace bringing us into spiritual conformity to His precepts, restores in us the image of God, and remakes us into true children of the Holy.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
If the Elders, the wise, the ancient, the educated, depart from this measurement of good and evil they depart from the good of their own souls. To the extent that the so called wise of this world leave off the instruction of God, they indulge in the foolishness of men and become a shadow of themselves. Wraithlike and Natural, they remain barely alive, and insensitive to joy, and hope, and life itself. How much more to wisdom, and beauty, and truth. Even the child who’s heart follows fast after God is wiser than all the grey haired stones with their wisdom of ashes.
101 I have kept my feet from every evil path
so that I might obey your word.
102 I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.
For you, yourself, have taught me. Really, though God might usually use means, no one teaches anyone else the wisdom of God. God is the only true teacher, and His word, His holy written law, is a revelation of Himself. In His law, He gives Himself away. To love God and love your neighbor as yourself being the essence of His law, because love does no harm to one’s neighbor, therefore love is the fulfillment of the Law.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.
I gain understanding. And understanding is the food of the soul. Proof of the sincerity of God. And the essence of the Christian life. To know truth, and to love truth, and to put away falsehood, and hate evil, is to find God in everything, and peace in finding God.
